December 10, 2014 By Leave a Comment

Burlington, Ont. – Dec. 10, 2014 —Mountainside Recreation Centre, which has been renovated by the City of Burlington, is reopening on Dec. 15.

The revitalization of the Mountainside Recreation Centre began in June 2013 and includes renewal of the pool change rooms, replacement of the arena floor and refrigeration system, new arena dressing rooms and the addition of a new lobby and two new community rooms.

“Staff from Capital Works and Parks and Recreation collaborated on the Mountainside revitalization project,” said Scott Stewart, the city’s general manager of development and infrastructure. “This allowed us to open the pool this summer while construction to the arena was ongoing. As the final touches are put in place, staff continue to work together for a smooth opening in December and celebration in January.”

The community is invited to a celebration and open house on Friday, Jan. 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. The event includes the official reopening ceremony, a skating demonstration by the Burlington Skating Club, and Tim Hortons free skates at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. Local artist, Simon Frank, will be on site with concepts for his public art piece for Mountainside and youth staff will be previewing the new teen space No Socks for Ivan.

“We’re excited to reopen the Mountainside Recreation Centre and celebrate with the community over the holidays,” said Chris Glenn, the city’s director of parks and recreation. “The revitalized centre will offer a recreational hub for the Mountainside community with many drop in programs, such as skating and youth activities and provide an updated facility for our many sport and community organizations that operate programs for the community.”

Mountainside Recreation Centre is located at 2205 Mount Forest Dr. For more information about skating, visit www.burlington.ca/skating or email skating@burlington.ca. For more information about the Mountainside construction project, please visit www.burlington.ca/mountainside.

Christmas comes early: Indwell’s Rudy Hulst Commons gets a boost from local REALTORS®

(December 10, 2014 – Hamilton, ON)  Affordable rental housing can be hard to find in the Hamilton area, and Indwell (formerly Homestead Christian Care) is addressing the need by building Rudy Hulst Commons, a permanently affordable housing complex in Hamilton’s East End.  The block will also house Indwell’s new headquarters and street-level commercial units.

“The Rudy Hulst Commons will provide 47 affordable one and two bedroom apartments, with supports, at 1430 Main St. E.,” says Jeff Neven, Executive Director of Indwell.  “Construction is proceeding well and we expect tenants to move in by the end of 2015.”

Indwell received an early Christmas present on Tuesday, December 9, when the REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington (RAHB), on behalf of its members and the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation, handed over a cheque in the amount of $15,000 for Rudy Hulst Commons.

“REALTORS® have an interest in building better communities,” said RAHB President Tim Mattioli, “and purpose-built, affordable apartments are an important part of a complete community.”

The REALTORS® Association of Hamilton-Burlington represents more than 2,700 real estate brokers and sales representatives from the Hamilton, Burlington and outlying areas.  RAHB subscribes to a “Quality of Life” philosophy which promotes the creation of vibrant, complete communities for the benefit of all residents.

“Indwell’s work in Hamilton certainly helps promote RAHB’s Quality of Life principles,” added Mattioli.  “REALTORS® don’t just sell houses; REALTORS® sell communities – the same communities in which they live and work.   Everyone wins when we can build safe, decent and affordable housing.”

Indwell is a Christian charity that creates affordable housing communities that support people seeking health, wellness and belonging.  Their programs support 250 households in Hamilton and Woodstock.

The REALTORS Care® Foundation provides grants to Ontario shelter-related charitable organizations, and since its inception has granted more than $3 million to Ontario charities.  The REALTORS Care® Foundation is supported by Ontario real estate associations and REALTORS®.
